Overview

Designing and launching Matter's first commerce platform, solo.

The challenge

Matter had lifestyle merchandise but no way to sell it. No storefront, no inventory system, no fulfillment workflow — and no team assigned to build one.

The brief

launch a fully branded shopping experience that could handle online purchases, in-store pickup, inventory, and order management. The catch: one designer, one week.

This wasn't a design exercise ending in a Figma file. The deliverable was a live, transacting platform.

What I shipped

A complete commerce platform on Shopify — designed, built, configured, and launched end-to-end.

Design

I designed the full shopping journey: discovery, product pages, cart, checkout, and post-purchase order tracking. This included defining the information architecture and product taxonomy — how merchandise was organized into collections, how variants (sizes, colors) were structured, and how the storefront guided browsing toward purchase. Promotional sections, banners, and storefront content rounded out the merchandising layer.

Build

Shopify's default themes didn't reflect Matter's visual identity, so I customized the theme at the code level — using AI-assisted development workflows to move at the speed the timeline demanded while keeping the output production-ready. Every layout was built responsive-first across desktop and mobile.

Operations

A storefront is the visible 20%. The other 80% was making commerce actually work: configuring products, variants, and inventory; setting up shipping and taxes; establishing fulfillment and delivery-tracking workflows; and deploying Shopify POS so employees could buy in person and pick up online orders in-store. Online checkout and POS purchases flowed through a single unified order pipeline — one source of truth for inventory and fulfillment.

Launch

I ran end-to-end QA across every purchase path — online checkout, store pickup, POS-assisted purchase — then took the platform to production for an internal employee rollout.

Support: Product photography and select marketing assets came from the Communication Design and Lifestyle teams. One engineer handled payment gateway integration. Everything else was mine.

A key decision: platform over custom build

With a one-week timeline, building custom was never realistic — but choosing Shopify wasn't just a speed play. The real requirement was operational completeness: inventory sync between online and in-store sales, POS hardware support, and fulfillment tracking that non-technical teams could run without me. Shopify delivered that infrastructure out of the box, which let me spend the week where design effort actually differentiated: the branded experience, the purchase journeys, and the operational workflows.

The trade-off was accepting Shopify's theming constraints — which I pushed against through code-level customization rather than settling for a templated look.

Results

Launched on schedule in 7 days.

But the more telling number is what happened after.

Orders processed : 221

Merchandise revenue : ₹1,20,099

Unique customers : 153

Best-seller : Solid T-shirt – Navy (98 units)

Sustained activity : 16 months (Jan 2025 – May 2026)

The platform kept transacting for 16 months after launch — orders placed, fulfilled, picked up in-store, and tracked — without redesign or operational rework. For an internal pilot, that sustained, self-running adoption was the strongest validation: the workflows I designed in week one held up as the operating system for Matter's merchandise.

Impact

Matter went from having no commerce capability to a unified platform handling online sales, in-store purchases, inventory, fulfillment, and delivery tracking through one operational workflow. The internal rollout validated every path a public launch would depend on — making this not just a store, but the foundation for Matter's future merchandise business.

If this went public tomorrow

The internal pilot surfaced clear next steps for a consumer launch: The platform was architected so none of these require rebuilding — they're extensions of workflows already proven in production.
